Review

Founded in 1947, Atlantic Records has been the home of some of jazz's more important figures (as well as blues). This compilation, originally issued as a two-fer LP, catches some of the excellent performances by the label's stable of jazz pianists over a period of 35 years. The earliest track is from Erroll Garner's first and only Atlantic album, Passport to Fame, a 1950 trio session where Garner applies his captivating style to The Way You Look Tonight.

The penultimate track on the album is from modernist Don Pullen. In between, there are cuts from albums made by some of the top jazz pianists, not only from that period, but whose work has stood the test of time and is still played regularly.
It also shows that owners/producers Ahmet and Nesuhi Ertegun and Herb Abramson were wise and sensible enough to find room for artists representing a wide diversity of styles, from Garner through Dave Brubeck to Pullen and Joe Zawinul.

Wide stylistic berth allowances notwithstanding, for most of these artists their stint with the label was short, a stopping off place before landing contracts with a major recording studio such as Columbia.
The title is also a bit misleading in the sense the label never had some of the participants under contract.

The cuts by Thelonious Monk and Bill Evans were from sessions headed by Art Blakey and Herbie Mann, respectively. But no matter how they got on the album, this collection of jazz piano is unmatched for its breadth and depth.

As is standard for Verve collections, this sampler provides a timeless taste of some of the top jazz names from the post-bebop years. Featuring excellent sound, the disc includes the likes of Lester Young (Polka Dots and Moonbeams), Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong (I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm), Chet Baker (Summertime), and Billie Holiday (Stormy Weather).

The vocal-instrumental mix continues it exemplary pace with more gems from Kenny Burrell, Roland Kirk, Clifford Brown, Jimmy Smith, Oliver Nelson, and several others.
Topped off with fine contributions by an all-star crew of sidemen (Hank Jones, J.J. Johnson, Gil Evans, Dizzy Gillespie), Verve Jazz Masters 60 will provide the perfect soundtrack to your next party, whether played during that early cocktail stretch or in the hazy late hours.

Introspection · Review

The cover illustration on Atlantic Jazz: Introspection, so beautifully drawn in watercolour by Michael Paraskevas, whose artwork graces all the covers in this 12 CD series, is a sketch of Keith Jarrett at his piano. When it comes to representing the introspective style of jazz music, Jarrett is often the first name that springs to mind. He has built his career on getting to the heart of a musical piece, whether it is through improvisation at his solo concerts, or by examining standards with his trio.

So it is fitting that he is the showcase artist on Atlantic Jazz: Introspection, an album that samples the period between 1966 through 1972. He is featured in an early trio (Standing Outside, with Charlie Haden and Paul Motian), sitting in with Gary Burton’s quartet (the airy Fortune Smiles), and as a member of Charles Lloyd’s group that played a monumental set at the 1966 Monterey Jazz Festival. Forest Flower—Sunrise is the piece used on this compilation.

Gary Burton is also represented playing unaccompanied vibraphone on an Antonio Carlos Jobim song, Chega de Saudade (No More Blues).
Other artists included on the album are keyboard whizzes Joe Zawinul and Chick Corea, and flautist Hubert Laws, who performs a song called Yoruba. The former two would later bring the introspective approach into the world of fusion by forming their respective groups, Weather Report and Return to Forever. But here they are in the early stages of developing their signature sound. Zawinul’s track, played alongside Herbie Hancock on electric piano, is the lovely In a Silent Way, which provided the launching point to Miles Davis' 1969 album of the same name.

The group of songs on Atlantic Jazz: Introspection is among the strongest I have heard in this collection. The pieces are beautiful examples of quiet (but not lite!) jazz played mostly on acoustic instruments.

My usual complaints with this collection—that there should be more artists included in a series this size and that it should reference the albums from where the songs originated—seem minor compared to the great music contained on this album. Out of the Atlantic Records vaults, this is about as perfect an introduction to the introspective side of jazz as one could wish for.

The Kansas City sound brought earthy yet lithe energy to both jazz and R&B: From the impulsive swing of Bennie Moten and Count Basie to Big Joe Turner's genre-straddling work, K.C.'s impact on music can be heard in rock, soul, and even funk. As part of its mammoth jazz box set, Atlantic spotlights such key K.C. figures as Jay McShann, alto saxophonist Buster Smith, and Turner himself. As a sort of potent aside, the disc also features some fine combo swing commandeered by Basie alum Vic Dickenson and Buck Clayton. And while the inclusion of T-Bone Walker is something of a mystery (a Texas native who worked out of L.A. for a good stretch), the inclusion of his cut of the classic "Evenin'" fits right into the flow here. Get out the whiskey and clear the dancefloor.

Pianist and vocalist Jay McShann, with whom Charlie Parker got his start, is the featured artist on three tracks recorded in 1977, a little late to get that authentic Kansas City taste. To hammer the point home, on one of the tracks McShann plays the electric piano. I can’t fault his choice of musicians, though, which include Buddy Tate and Paul Quinichette on tenor sax, Milt Hinton on bass, and a

Blue Note 70th Anniversary

From the jump in 1939 jazz aficionados Alfred Lion and Frank Wolff, emigres from Berlin, followed their instincts by recording great artists playing pure jazz. The 50s and 60s were, and still are, considered the classic Blue Note period in relation to not only what they recorded but the engineering of Rudy Van Gelder, the photography of Frank Wolff, and, eventually, the art direction of Reid Miles.

The so-called hard bop of the mid- 50s in New York essentially began with a Blue Note album, Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers. What hard bop did was to draw on rural blues and gospel music in finding a whole new audience for jazz.



The idea for a group to carry forth the tribute during Blue Note's 70th year originated with booking agent Jack Randall, and was formed by musical director Bill Charlap, Randall, and Danny Melnick. When plans for the extensive tour reached more than 50 American cities, the idea of a recording was inevitable.

The Blue Note 7 was not conceived as an all-star group but it is stellar in stature. It is more than a tribute band, a cadre with a cohesive compatibility, dealing with powerful music and reinterpreting it through their new arrangements and individual solos.

New Orleans residents celebrate Christmas with customs that are both old and new, borrowed and invented. The faithful still attend Christmas Eve mass at St. Louis Cathedral in the Vieux Carre, or French Quarter. In olden days, this would be followed by a long, elaborate dinner known as reveillon, a meal that is still served in parts of France and Canada. Today, many of New Orleans' finest restaurants offer reveillon throughout December.

Twinkling electric lights and flickering holiday candles can be found everywhere in the city, recalling the French custom of fete des lumieres, when candles are placed in the windows of every house in a village. In downtown New Orleans, the block-long lobby of the Fairmont Hotel is dressed every year in a cloud-like canopy of angel hair and holiday lights, while in New Orleans' City Park, strings of more than two million lights decorate the limbs of the majestic old oak trees.

All along the bayous of the countryside outside New Orleans, bonfires known as feux de joie are lit on Christmas Eve-reminding residents of their European ancestors and providing Pere Noel with enough light to find every child's home.

The music of New Orleans at Christmas time also reflects this love for making holiday traditions new again. Well-known songs are sung with a different feeling, while newly composed songs fondly recall favorite holiday memories. The warmth of the holiday flavors, the unique character of the music; why, is the Christmas season so special to the people of New Orleans? Because it combines three basic elements-celebration, family gatherings, and generosity-all of which can be found in great abundance in New Orleans and throughout Louisiana.

Nowadays, when the term "mainstream jazz" is used in most circles, it is synonymous with bland, inoffensive, smooth jazz. Perhaps all too aware of that, critic Bob Blumenthal stumbles a bit in his liner notes to Atlantic Jazz: Mainstream by going to the dictionary to explain how this album was compiled. He had no need to do so, for “mainstream” shouldn’t be considered a dirty word.

Rather, these are recordings made by some of the more popular artists to pass through the Atlantic studio. If their music appeals to a wider audience, not only exposing more listeners to jazz but also allowing Atlantic to pay the bills, so be it. These mainstream artists are widely respected in the jazz community. It’s not like we’re talking Kenny G here.

The concept of mainstream incorporates several unique types of jazz, at least as it is presented on this album. Big band is represented on tracks from Duke Ellington ("Perdido") and Woody Herman ("Four Brothers"), as well as a European edition co-led by expatriate bop drummer Kenny Clarke and Belgian piano player Francy Boland ("Speedy Reeds"). At the other end of the spectrum, The Modern Jazz Quartet performs a more intimate chamber jazz.

Horn man Tony Fruscella, who played in the cool mode, opens the album with a stirring rendition of "I'll Be Seeing You." Art Farmer and Ira Sullivan, both of whom prefer the bop style, also treat the listener to stately ballads.

Coleman Hawkins takes us back to the days of swing while David "Fathead" Newman and his employer, one Ray Charles, go even further back by giving a dedicated reading to Fats Waller’s “Ain’t Misbehavin’.”

Despite its abundance of styles, Atlantic Jazz: Mainstream is well programmed. For example, Side 2 contains the three big band tracks, all upbeat numbers, separated by the Farmer and Sullivan ballads, “Embraceable You” and “Everything Happens to Me”, respectively.

There is also a sense of jazz history, or at least continuity, at play. On Coleman Hawkins’ piece, the self-penned "Stuffy," Milt Jackson and Connie Kay back him up. The very next cut is “Django,” a tribute to the Gypsy guitar legend Django Reinhardt. It is performed by the Modern Jazz Quartet, of which Jackson and Kay were members. Following that number comes Reinhardt's own “Daphne” as performed by his onetime partner, violinist Stephane Grappelli.

Although there is nothing particularly earth-shattering about these performances, all 10 of its tracks are refreshing to hear. Also, each track has a different lead artist, something that cannot be said of most of the other albums in this series. In that sense, Atlantic Jazz: Mainstream is an ideal sampler. Recommended: Yes.

ACT: 10 Magic Years

Diez años de riesgo son, en el mundillo discográfico, buena excusa de celebración. Torres más altas han caído en menos tiempo por el riesgo asumido. Ser creativo en la propuesta discográfica suele desembocar en dos caminos: la muerte o la absorción por una multinacional (¿acaso sinónimo de lo primero?).

Tratar de resumir en los 70 minutos (la duración del disco) lo mejor de un sello como ACT es ardua tarea. Son muchos los sonidos que quedan para la curiosidad personal de investigación y, por lo contrario, se cuelan otros que quizá desentonan en contexto marcado por la especial belleza del jazz que bebe de la cultura tradicional.

La cultura tradicional caracteriza en muchos casos la diferencia sustancial del jazz del resto del mundo en comparación con el jazz norteamericano. Siglos de tradición musical (y por extensión, cultural) reflejados en una música de especial sentimiento. Sentimientos de cultura tradicional sueca (excepcional dúo Nils Landgren -trombón- y Esbjörn Svensson -piano-), vietnamita (Nguyên Lê - guitarra- Huong Thanh -voz-), flamenca (Cañizares, Pardo, Benavent, "El Portugués"... ¿necesitan presentación?) entre otras. Todas ellas caracterizan a este sello creado por Sigfried Loch quien, antes de crear ACT, conoció las miserias de la industria discográfica. Miserias de creatividad.

Este "diez años mágicos" hace justicia a uno de los lemas de la casa: "Un poco de magia en un mundo ruidoso". Filosofías que de alguna manera anexionan ACT con el también alemán ECM y su ya famoso "el mejor sonido después del silencio".

En resumen: un recopilatorio que sirve de escaparate de lo que ACT ofrece en una, en general, acertada selección. Descubrimiento de nombres a respetar y confirmación de los ya clásicos de lo no tan clásico.

Curiosidad a modo de Post Data: el sello se fundó en 1992 con un proyecto de jazz-flamenco llamada "Jazzpaña" con nombres del flamenco y jazz-flamenco español, la WDR alemana y artistas internacionales como Michael Brecker o Peter Erskine. Sello alemán. En fin... y aquí, muriéndonos del asco.
